There are over two million donkeys in Australia!

Since 1997, Donkey Shelter Inc. has provided rescue and sanctuary for Victorian donkeys and mules that have been orphaned, neglected, abused, abandoned, surrendered, and saved from certain death.

We are the only facility in Victoria to specialise in rehabilitating and caring for very young, old, and sick donkeys and mules for the rest of their lives. We do not sell or breed donkeys. The only donkeys born at the Shelter are those whose mothers were pregnant when they arrived.

Our Donkey Shelter is currently home to 70 donkeys and five mules; our sister property near Echuca, Tongala Donkey Retreat, houses in excess of 100 donkeys.

The Shelter is a non-profit, non-government funded, solely community-based charity. We rely 100 per cent on fundraising and donations from the public and business community to cover our operating and infrastructure costs.

2. •Training to donkeys and mules with unsuitable temperaments
   

3. •Work in donkey therapy with people experiencing physical, mental and intellectual handicaps
   

4. •Guidance to people seeking advice on donkey health care and caring for donkeys
   

5. •Response to requests from animal welfare groups and members of the public to rescue donkeys from often tragic situations
   

6. •A tranquil home to these gentle-natured equines
